Petition to Give Forgotten Disney More Love
Given that this is a forgotten Disney blog at some point we have to discuss the forgotten king of Disney, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
Often Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is stated to be the first Disney character, however that's not really the case. His predecessor would be Alice from The Alice Comedies, which is something we'll probably cover at some point.
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was made by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks for Universal studios. Yes, that Universal.
Oswald was a big success and even made some merchandise too.
The first Oswald short, "Poor Papa" was scrapped for making Oswald the Lucky Rabbit seem old.
The start of Oswald's fame was with the short "Trolley Troubles" in 1927.
Charles Mintz wanted to cut the budget so Walt left Universal, leaving Oswald. After making a few more cartoons Oswald was only featured in comics for a while.
Oswald also got a redesign and was often shown with his nephews.
When Bob Iger became president of The Walt Disney Company he promised he'd get the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit back.
To get the rights to Oswald back they traded sports caster Al Micheals to NBC Universal; Al Micheals had no problems with this saying that maybe one day he could be the answer to a trivia question.
Then in 2010 came Epic Mickey.
This game put Oswald as the ruler of the Wasteland, a place where forgotten Disney characters live. Some of these characters Mickey Mouse doesn't even remember.
Oswald feels Mickey stole his rightful place and hates him for stealing his fame.
Eventually they become friends and accept each other as brothers.
Epic Mickey spawned a few sequels as well, including Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two.
